Marc Jacobs Strips for Calvin Klein Interview in Harper’s Bazaar
Aug 13th
Marc Jacobs knows clothes, but that doesn’t mean he has to wear them, OK?
The designer strips off in a revealing new interview with Calvin Klein for the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar.
Covered only by a well-placed bathrobe in the Nan Goldin-shot image, Jacobs opens up about his nude Bang fragrance ad, his desire to create wearable fashions, and his body image.
“When guys started looking at me and asking me out on dates, I felt way better about myself,” he tells Klein.
“So it was hard to keep my clothes on, actually. And whenever I was asked to take my clothes off, I was like, ‘Sure! I haven’t worked out for three years to keep this all under wraps.’”
Don’t let us stop you. We’re still mopping up the drool from that Bang ad.
“I did feel good about the way I looked, so it was easy and — well, a guy looks better to me with no clothes on than with clothes,” Jacobs says of the shoot.
Fair enough. But when it comes to his clients — which may soon extend to plus-size gals – Jacobs seems grounded in reality.
“I’m not interested in making stuff for museums; I want the clothes to be worn,” he says.
“I don’t care if the girl sits on a curb in them after a party and they’re destroyed.
“I have to believe that there’s going to be a life for these things. Otherwise, I wouldn’t send them down the catwalk.”
Word. But trust us, MJ — if we wear one of your designs and it gets destroyed, we’ll care enough for the both of us.

Behold Calvin Klein’s Latest Shots of the Spectacular David Agbodji
Jul 30th
As far as bodies go, David Agbodji is like the Gisele of the male modeling world: His whole body is unreal, but his legs and behind are especially spectacular. Calvin Klein previously called attention to the splendor of his backside in its Madison Avenue windows, where a giant shot of Agdobji’s greasy rump once faced the tony street directly. In the fall, his same greasy gorgeousness faced down onto Houston from the Calvin Klein billboard there. Calvin hired Adbodji again to star in the fall campaign, in which he’s much more matte than wet-looking. See for yourself in the slideshow.
Zoe Saldana’s Sexy New Role: Calvin Klein Underwear Model!
Jul 11th
What gets between Zoe Saldana and her Calvins? Very little by the looks of her steamy new ad campaign for Calvin Klein Underwear. At a press conference in Germany today, the fashion label announced Saldana’s new starring role as the face of Calvin Klein Underwear and Calvin Klein Envy, the brand’s newest product launch, for fall 2010. “Calvin Klein has always put forth such beautifully executed campaigns,” the Avatar star says in a statement. “It’s very exciting for me to be associated with such an iconic, globally recognized brand like Calvin Klein Underwear.” Saldana’s sexy ads, which were shot by renowned fashion photographer Mikael Jansson in New York City, will make their debut in October 2010 fashion magazines as well as online and on outdoor signage at the same time. As Calvin Klein’s newest underwear model, Saldana will follow in the footsteps of steamy screen siren Eva Mendes who has sizzled in the label’s underwear, denim and fragrance campaigns since 2008. Calvin Klein Underwear Models: Do we really want them to talk?
Jun 21st
The images of Calvin Klein Underwear’s new X collection have begun to surface. Here, we see Twilight’s Kellan Lutz andTrue Blood‘s Mehcad Brooks, now of ABC’s The Deep End. In this campaign, the gentlemen are joined by Spanish tennis star Fernando Verdasco and Japanese soccer star Hidetoshi Nakata. According to Women’s Wear Daily, Calvin Klein Underwear will spend nearly one-fifth of its X marketing money on digital platforms, like Facebook, going as far as to set up a website — Xmarkyourspot.com, which isn’t live yet — to feature behind-the-scenes videos of the models. There will also be broadcast and taxi TV spots, in addition to print and outdoor ads. ”The four different guys give us different ways to express things,” Bob Mazzoli, chief creative officer for Calvin Klein Underwear, has said. ”They have different personalities, and that helps in our dialogue with our consumers.” According to WWD, some of the footage of the models includes profanity, which has been “bleeped out by sound and by an X that appears over the mouth.”
Do we actually need to hear these guys speak? I’d argue an underwear campaign works best when the still shot says it all. To me, Lutz’s says, “I may be the No. 3 guy in the Twilightfranchise, but I’m No. 1 here, baby.” Brooks’ says, “You hated Eggs, but you could never hate these abs. Go ahead. Touch ‘em.” If an interactive element is needed, my colleague Michael Slezak would suggest Calvin Klein take a cue from Adidas and adapt its Jersey Swap.* Click on that link and you’ll be asked to choose two of its five models to watch exchange shirts. Note, Calvin Klein, that the models only mime saying hello as they take off the jersey they’re wearing and hand it to their pal. Also note the use of slo-mo replay.
* Of course, Calvin Klein Underwear models don’t wear shirts… so maybe they could swap boxer briefs. You could X out the nakedness, and like the Adidas boys, they would just throw the briefs over their shoulders.
